Michael H. Carrel has been President and Chief Executive Officer and a Director of Vital Images since January 2008. He served as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer from May 2005 until January 2008. Mr. Carrel was part-time Interim Chief Financial Officer of Vital Images from January 2005 until May 2005. From January 1, 2005 until May 2005, he was employed as Senior Vice President of Strategy and Business Development of Technology Solutions Company ("TSC"), a publicly-held technology consulting company. Mr. Carrel was President and Chief Executive Officer of Zamba Corporation ("Zamba"), a publicly-held customer relationship management company, from July 1, 2004 until December 31, 2004, when Zamba was acquired by TSC. Mr. Carrel served as Executive Vice President of Zamba from October 2000 until July 1, 2004, its Vice President from October 1998 to October 2000, and its Chief Financial Officer from October 1998 until December 31, 2004. He also served as Chief Financial Officer of NextNet Wireless, Inc., a privately-held provider of non-line-of-sight plug and play broadband wireless access systems, from October 1, 2003 through March 31, 2004, when it was sold to Clearwire Corporation.
Vikram Simha was named Chief Technology Officer in August 2008 and was also Executive Vice President Engineering from August 2008 until August 2009. From August 2001 until July 2008, Mr. Simha held software engineering and software management positions at TeraRecon Inc., including service as Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President, 3D Engineering from December 2007 through July 2008 and as Vice President, 3D Engineering from June 2005 through December 2007. Mr. Simha was a software engineer and principal software engineer at Vital Images from 1994 to 1998.
Peter J. Goepfrich was named Chief Financial Officer in January 2008. From March 2007 until January 2008, Mr. Goepfrich was Vice President Finance and Accounting. Previously, he was Senior Director of Finance from March 2005 to March 2007 and Controller from August 2004 to March 2005. From September 1997 to August 2004, Mr. Goepfrich served in PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP's Assurance and Business Advisory Services practice with a specialization in the audit of technology companies. From December 1996 to August 1997, Mr. Goepfrich was assistant controller at Management Resource Initiatives, Inc., a consulting firm to emerging companies providing key infrastructure support. Ian L. Nemerov has been with Vital Images since August 2005. Between January 2005 and August 2005, he provided legal and human resources services to software companies, including Vital Images. He served as Vice President and General Counsel of Zamba Corporation ("Zamba"), a publicly-held customer relationship management consultancy, from January 1997 through December 2004, when Zamba was acquired by Technology Solutions Company. From August 1993 through December 1996, he was an attorney with Dataserv, Inc., a software and computer services company that was a subsidiary of BellSouth Corporation until it was acquired by Wang Laboratories in May 1996. Mr. Nemerov clerked for Justices Alan C. Page and Lawrence R. Yetka of the Minnesota Supreme Court and graduated cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School.
Erkan Akyuz has been Executive Vice President of Engineering since August 2009. Prior to Vital Images, Mr. Akyuz was employed at Agfa Healthcare, a $1.8 billion subsidiary of Agfa, where he served as chief technology officer for several years. While at Agfa, Akyuz also led the Imaging Informatics and Radiology IT business units, with responsibility for a substantial portion of the IT business. Previously, he held a variety of technology leadership positions at Agfa, including vice president of R&D (1000+ engineers based in 13 different countries), director of technology and architecture, and director of process, methodologies and tools. At Agfa, Akyuz was actively involved in acquiring and integrating healthcare IT companies, and came to Agfa following Agfa's acquisition of Mitra Imaging, where he held various technical positions. Prior to Mitra Imaging, Akyuz was in software development with Atlantis Systems International, a defense contractor.
Executive Vice President Sales and International
Steven P. Canakes was named Executive Vice President Sales and International Operations in March 2008. He was Executive Vice President Global Sales from September 2005 until March 2008. Mr. Canakes was the Company's Vice President-Sales from March 2000 until September 2005, its Vice President-U.S. Sales from August 1998 to March 2000 and its Director of U.S. Sales from March 1998 to August 1998. From July 1996 to March 1998, Mr. Canakes was Vice President of Business Development for MedManagement, LLC in Plymouth, Minnesota. From February 1994 to July 1996, he served as Vice President of Sales for Medintell Systems and Value Health Corporation, a Medintell Systems Division. Before February 1994, Mr. Canakes was a CT Product Sales Manager for Picker International, Inc.
Stephen S. Andersen was named Vice President - Strategic Partnerships in March 2008, after serving as Vice President - Sales Operations from since May 2007. He served as Vice President - Vital Images Europe from January 2006 until May 2007. He held the position of Vice President - Engineering from January 2004 until January 2006. Mr. Andersen has been employed at Vital Images since May 1999 and has held roles of increasing responsibility, most recently serving as Senior Director of Quality and Customer Satisfaction from January 2002 until January 2004. From February 1997 to May 1999, Mr. Andersen served as Program Manager and Business Development Manager for Internet Technologies at LodgeNet Entertainment. Before 1997, Mr. Andersen held technical support positions in the banking and telecommunications industry at Precision Computer Systems and Martin & Associates.
Cindy J. Edwards was named Vice President, Human Resources in March of 2007. She began her career with Vital Images, Inc. in 1999, as the Director of Human Resources, and was promoted to Senior Director of Human Resources in 2002. During her tenure at Vital Images, Edwards has led the effort to build the company from an employee base of 50 employees to over 300 today. Prior to joining Vital Images, Edwards served as the HR Manager for the Assessments Division at Pearson plc (formerly National Computer Systems, Inc.). Prior to her HR work at Pearson, she worked as an HR Generalist in the non-profit sector. Ms. Edwards holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the College of St. Benedict in Minnesota. In addition, she maintains her Senior Professional in Human Resources certification.
Jim D. Litterer was named Vice President, Services in March 2008 and is currently responsible for all aspects of global service delivery which includes professional services, customer support, customer education, and services marketing and sales. During his tenure with the Company, Mr. Litterer has held a succession of roles; he was named Senior Director, Services in August 2007; Director of Customer Support from 2004 to 2007; Manager, Customer Support from 2003 to 2004; and Field Implementation Engineer prior to that. Before May 2002, Mr. Litterer served as Services Operations Analyst at Stellent, Inc. where he helped build out global Customer Support operations. Mr. Litterer holds a Bachelor of Science in Management and Information Systems from Iowa State University.
Marc M. Lamont was named Managing Director Vital Images Europe in June 2007 for the Company's office in Den Haag, the Netherlands. Before joining Vital Images, Marc served many years in senior management roles including Managing Director Europe and European Director of Sales and Marketing in leading medical companies like Boston Scientific Europe and Baxter Healthcare. He combines a medical university education with a Master of Business Administration obtained in cooperation with Northwestern University.
